WDM–PON

WDM–PON is a local project funded from Research Promotion Foundation, with duration 36 months. The WDM-PON Consortium includes 4 organisations and one individual researcher. These partners are: Cyprus Academic Research Institute (CARI) –project coordinator, University of Cyprus, University of Patra, (Greece), PrimeTel Plc (Cyprus) and professor Mohamed A Ali(USA) as an individual researcher . The objectives of the WDM–PON project include designing the network architecture with the necessary algorithms and protocols to provide end-users with access to the enormous bandwidth available in the Wide Area and Metropolitan Area Networks. This will be achieved through a FTTH/FTTC solution in an affordable, simple and future-proof way thus improving the quality of Communications Infrastructure, and allowing the wide spread and/or improvement of bandwidth-hungry applications that have either been limited in their capacity or too expensive for wide use (such as high-definition TV, IPTV, VoIP, interactive games, video-on-demand, e-learning, and peer-to-peer applications). It will also raise the bandwidth mismatch between WAN/MAN and Access Networks and thus allow for new and unforeseen applications to emerge and attain widespread popularity.

Other general objectives of the project include:

  • Bringing knowledge from outside Cyprus to the local Telecommunications Community (both industrial and research)
  • Starting a close and meaningful collaboration between Local and International research, academic, and business organizations in the field of Optical Communications and Networking
  • Creating an Optical Communications and Networking lab which will specialize in evaluating novel optical network architectures and protocols and provide benchmarks for future research.
